Malta: Interesting But Very Difficult Past Review
By Esther M (Anthropology., New Mexico State University) for
ISEP Exchange: Msida - Exchange Program at University of Malta
During my first semester I really felt the whole thing was a waste of time. But I think if I hadn't done it I would have wondered and wished I had done it. Plus, the friends I made are amazing. If for nothing else I'm glad I did it for the friends I made. Academically it really was not worth it. I didn't get to take the classes I went there to take. Plus it was so difficult to work with the university.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
1. I do not think the assessment method at the university is a good way to determine a student's knowledge. They do not assign regular homework. They usually base the whole grade on one exam/assignment. Most of the professors expect you to do everything on your own. Like they expect you to teach yourself. That's their job! |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The ISEP coordinator was not a lot of help. She didn't seem to know much more than we did. When we would go to her with questions she would basically dictate the university website to us without any explanation or send us out to figure it out on our own. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The university residence was pretty good. They provided bedding and towels, rented out kitchen things, provided a courtesy bus to and from campus, had a pool and a little convenience store/bar. But the quality of the apartments aren't very high. Most of the kitchens were very small and crowded. |
* Food: |
We were given a stipend to buy and cook food on our own. There is a canteen on campus but the food isn't that great. There are some really good places right off campus though. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
My best cultural memories are actually from the other international students at the residence. We organized country themed parties where the people from whatever country would make food typical of their country. I grew a love for English tea and biscuits from one of my British friends. My Polish roommate made us an awesome Polish meal one time. As far as my Maltese experiences, I went to Carnival, we bought masks and went to the street festival. My roommate and I went to a lot of museums and visited historic areas of Malta. One night one of my Maltese friends made us an authentic Maltese meal. There was a student organization (AGEE) who put on some really good activities for the international students (welcome party, Maltese lessons, scavenger hunt in the old capitol, international cuisine night etc.) |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I did not have occasion to test out the healthcare. I never was sick enough to have to see a doctor. But some of my friend's who did go had no problem. Students get free emergency care at the hospital. Malta is a very safe place. We would be out late and have no problem walking home. I never felt nervous or in danger. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | With ISEP you get a monthly stipend so you should budget it out. Groceries cost me about 30-50 euro every week or two. I also put away little every month so that after a while I had enough to make a trip to Rome. |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | This program would be good for someone who is not too worried about completing credits. This would be very enjoyable for someone more interested in the experience than the academics. |
