Sunderland: A Trip to Remember Past Review

By (Theatre and English, Nebraska Wesleyan University) for

ISEP Exchange: Sunderland - Exchange Program at University of Sunderland

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This was certainly a worthwhile experience. I feel much more prepared for whatever I choose to do in life, because I am more independent and know what I can accomplish when I am in a new environment. I learned that I am really the one who gets to make my decisions, and I learned that through experience with travels, classes,and connections. It was a great experience to learn all those things in such a great environment.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I felt that the workload was extremely light. I am used to taking six or seven classes at one time, and I was told that I could only take three in Sunderland because they were so timely. I hardly had homework, but when I did I did not feel very stressed about it. I was glad though that I had more time to travel because of the smaller course load, so I am thankful for that. The grading system was not explained well to me until I looked it up, I received at 63 on something and I was so upset, then someone mentioned that is a really good grade. I was shocked. I liked learning about the different teaching methods, and I was certainly out of my element with such a large school.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

There were some good services, for instance there was a trip planned to York which was really nice. However, contacting people in their office was challenging because they wouldn't let us go to their office, they would have to meet us downstairs. I always wondered why we couldn't go to their office.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I wish that the housing would have been closer to the campus, classes, and areas for where people actually hang out. It seems very far off the beaten path. I was fortunate to have someone give me free cookware when I arrived, so that was great! Safetywise, I did not feel too safe there for quite a while. I eventually got used to it though, and I never would walk on my own in that area at night.

* Food:

I usually bought my own food with a meal stipend. A few extra pounds would have been helpful because I mainly ate mean that cost 1 pound each, which isn't much. There was a place nearby called Murtha's Fish and Chips and it was honestly the best place I found for food! I loved it! Also, getting a card at Iceland was helpful so I could save money on all the frozen food I bought. It would have been nice to have a place with Mexican food, or even just tex-mex, but I worked around it.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There was a trip organized to York and it was brilliant! I loved it so much, and it was great that it was so early in the year so I could meet people. I wish they organized more of those events in a semester. It would keep people talking to each other and exploring places we may not have thought to go to.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

There was a hospital right across from where I lived. Very close. When I needed it I had not registered for a doctor (definetly my fault because I had been told to in advance but I thought I wouldn't need it). Everyone should listen to that advice and sign up right away so when you need it you will be prepared. The NHS was different for me because I am not used to waiting to be seen and then just being told to "come back in three weeks if your voice isn't back". I wanted some sort of prescription and I was shocked to not get something to cure it.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I had a stipend of about 35 pounds per week for food. Then I would buy a metro ticket or two each week so that may be another 5 pounds. I didn't need to buy too much unless I was traveling and wanted a souvenir.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Save your money from a food stipend and make sure you allocate it correctly. I had saved a bit each week so I could spend the remaining few pounds on a drink at a pub that week. It allowed me to scrimp when I needed to, but I could still get by.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Fluent
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Art of Modern Poetry
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? The people here are very friendly and helpful. I certainly recommend it if you are looking to be around good people. It is a smaller town, but there are certainly diamonds in the rough all around.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Introduction to Screenwriting

Course Department: not sure
Instructor: Julie Blackie
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This was the best class that I took when abroad. The professor truly cared about the students being there and she even invited me to a screenwriters meeting in a nearby city. I loved everything about this course and wish the course was taught at my home university

Theatre Production 2

Course Department: not sure
Instructor: Roy (last name was rarely said so I don't recall)
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This class was truthfully not one of my favorites. I was disappointed that there was no stage space that could be used to rehearse in. Also, I would have liked to have more instruction from the moderator, and instead we led ourselves as a group of students. I felt that it was just not very organized and I was usually very frustrated or upset after leaving this class. I wish it had been a better experience.

Art of Modern Poetry

Course Department: not sure
Instructor: don't remember
Instruction Language: English
Comments: I enjoyed the assignments in this course to write certain poems. I wish we would have written more and done more peer reviews to help us improve on future poems. The professor was helpful and personable and the students in the class were welcoming as well.
