Italy Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs
There are so many options and so much knowledge to be discovered. Studying abroad has made such an impact on my life. I am now focused on heading back there as soon as possible and would love to spend the rest of my life there. To experience a culture other than our own is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
LdM is a great school with a variety of classes to entertain any major. The professors are excellent and very knowledgeable. The main difference between the classes at my home university and the classes at LdM is the class length. I was a bit shocked to learn the the classes were usually at least 2 hours long (and certain studio art classes could be up to 5), but I quickly learned that most of the time, depending on which classes you take, you spend about an hour lecturing and an hour visiting churches, museums, and other important cultural staples. It was amazing to actually see what you learn about normally on a PowerPoint slide in person! |

On-site administration of your program |
I have nothing but great things to say about Athena. As far as actually advising in Italy, my advisor, who is no longer with the program, was an absolute blessing. She was so attentive to our needs and always helped with any problems that had presented themselves. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Our apartment was beautiful and very spacious. We were located about 20 minutes (walking time) from the city center, but it never felt far. We were also conveniently placed down the street from the grocery store and quite close to many shops. It was perfect placement. |
* Food: |
There is really no meal plan option, so buying your own food/eating out is a must. We were provided a refrigerator, stove, microwave, and oven, so cooking was very easy. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Athena offers many side trips, and you can pick any two to be included in your program. the most memorable for me was our trip to Cannes, Nice, Eze, St. Paul de Vence, and Monaco. It was beautiful and lots of fun! Everything was paid for (travel and lodging). I felt very fortunate to be able to go on this trip with no extra expense! |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I think that I felt more safe walking across the city at night than I would walking downtown here. I did not have an experience with health care, so I don't have any particular input on that. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
Language acquisition improvement? |
Most Italians will speak English with you, but some, especially in the smaller towns, prefer to speak Italian. I found it most helpful to befriend a few locals and practice my Italian with them. there were quite a few times when I found myself actually (willingly) having a full conversation in Italian. |

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | This program is perfect for any type of student - outgoing, shy, adventurous, etc. My advice would be this: don't be afraid. Go out, get lost (but bring your map just in case!), try out all the restaurants, shop until you drop, and go out on the town! Meet the locals! They do, after all, know the city best. |
