Time of My Life in the Eternal City Past Review

By (Psychology, John Carroll University) for

John Cabot University - Study Abroad in Rome, Italy

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was very worthwhile! I learned a lot about the Italian culture 1st hand. I learned things that you just can't learn from a book. I grew as a person and strengthened my friendships with many of my friends even while being so far away from them. In the end I didn't want to go home!

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

So professors were harder than others but overall a great experience. The professors try to take into consideration that you are only there for such a short amount of time and they want you to see what Rome and Italy have to offer.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

For the most part the staff was friendly and helpful but there were the occasional people that were not so helpful. The degree seeking students were actually the most helpful.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Loved the apartment! The location was great, a little far from school and there wasn't a good bus to take to get to school but the walk was really nice! The people in our neighborhood were so helpful and friendly. Some of the roommates weren't the best but it ended up working out just fine. Everything we needed was provided for us. We didn't need to buy sheets or towels. We did buy some cookware things to ease our cooking but that was a personal choice.

* Food:

didn't have any food through the school. We had to cook everything ourselves which was hard at times. We had a great variety of places to eat where we lived. And they were pretty cheap too!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There were a lot of great programs to attend! Excursions, movie nights, class field trips. My art history class allowed me to visit almost every museum in Rome and Florence for free which was amazing!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Just be careful and watch out for your friends. Use common sense when going out and don't draw attention to yourself. I never personally felt unsafe but I know of a couple people who were almost pick-pocketed.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I took an advanced level Italian class and the professor would only speak Italian to us. She took us out to restaurants, had us watch movies, and interact with native Italian speakers to improve our understanding of the language. I learned a LOT in the few short months I was there!

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Everything was just great!
* What could be improved?
  • They have already expanded the school and started offering a meal plan. If they didn't, I would suggest that!
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Go! Studying abroad is truly one of the best experiences you will ever have in college! You get to see another part of the world that you may never get to experience otherwise. Being able to be complete submersed in a different culture is a once in a lifetime experience. You will make friendships that last a lifetime and won't want to come home!
