Best trip I've ever been on!! Past Review

Kansas State University: International Business in China, Hosted by the Asia Institute

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Every second that I was on the trip I learned something. Everyone always talks about what China is like, but really you have to go and experience it for yourself. It was great to see how American companies do business in China. It made me able to see myself working abroad at some point in my lifetime. The trip and everything we did in it was worthwhile and I would do it all over again if I could.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I personally had no idea what to expect and when I arrived in China I was shocked. Their is so much to take in and learn that it can be overwhelming at times. From walking around the city to visiting companies, it was all educational.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The Asia institute did a fantastic job organizing everything. It was nice not having to worry about where we are going all the time. All the daily activities were run perfectly, as transportation was always on time which left for lots of sight seeing.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The hotels were great both in Beijing and Hong Kong. Just beware of the rock hard beds, which took a while to get adjusted to.

* Food:

Every meal we had a different province served to us, which they were all delicious. I was able to enjoy some duck head, jellyfish, etc which you cant find back in the states. I definitely enjoyed the actual Chinese food compared to American Chinese (they are nothing alike).

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt like I got a good dose of the culture, but it would have been neat to see some celebrations or shows that the Chinese have.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Myself and a few others got some virus upon our arrival into Hong Kong, which we were all stuck in our rooms for 24 hours. It was basically a waiting game, so we couldn't use any medicine.

* Safety:

The one thing we were warned of was to watch out for pick pocketing. Other than that I felt safe walking around town.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I specifically set aside a few hundred dollars for this trip and I had plenty to bring back home. It costs around $50-60 dollars at the majority of restaurants to feed all nine people in our group, so it was pretty cheap.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Just start saving up early and it's always good to over bring money because you can always bring the extra back home. Plus its important to set a budget for yourself.
