Life-changing Past Review
By A student (Berea College) - abroad from 09/01/2017 to 06/22/2018 with
Keimyung University: Daegu - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
I learned a great deal about the culture and language, and I have learned how I can work harder on learning the language. It was definitely the most worthwhile experience I've ever had.

Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
|
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
|
* Food: |
The cafeteria food was terrible, but food is cheap in the country, so it wasn't terrible having to eat out a lot. Still, it was expensive having to pay every day. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
Health care was easily accessible, and at the hospital I went to there were friendly medical translators that helped me. The treatments and appointments were significantly less expensive there. |
* Safety: |
This is the safest country I have ever lived in. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
Daegu, South Korea was an amazing city with plenty of things to do with friends. This city has become my home away from home, especially with all of the friends I have made there. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
2.5-- when you are unable to work and have to use money every day for food, it's very difficult to budget |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $100 a week on food or so, and then maybe $25-50 for other expenses such as transportation |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Make sure you watch your bank account. Often you don't think twice about small $5 or less expenses, but those add up faster than you expect. Keep a book or something to take notes in and watch what you're spending. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
|
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Intermediate |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | Korean level 2 |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Speak with natives and practice outside of class!!! The classes aren't enough alone because there is barely any speaking. You have to actively work to learn the languagae |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Exchange |
