Eye Opening Experiences in Salzburg Past Review
By Alexander B (Music Technology, Bellarmine College) for
KIIS: Salzburg - Experience Salzburg (Summer)
I believe the program was very worthwhile. I gained an entirely new perspective on myself and my own culture, learned much from my interactions with others, and believe myself to have matured through my travels. The credit from the classes I took is a nice bonus.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Classes were immersive and encouraged deep thought about the subjects. Projects to be completed in groups or solo were given regularly, collaboration was encouraged, and evaluations were very reasonable. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The faculty overall were very knowledgeable about the city and could advise students on sights to see, how to integrate better into the society, how transportation worked, and other such considerations. However, the faculty leader of the program was extremely unorganized, had regular miscommunications with the hostel which resulted in misinforming students about what to expect in terms of living accommodations, scheduling, and rules. Students were constantly frustrated by feeling left in the dark as to what accommodations were going to be and how situations were going to be dealt with; rules were constantly changed or conflicted with previously enumerated rules. In general, the program felt very unorganized. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The neighborhood, as well as country overall, were extremely safe, tourist friendly, and beautiful. The inner city was a short bus ride or nice walk away, and students were able to take a short walk to various grocers and restaurants in the neighborhood. Class was held in classrooms located on the bottom floor of the hostel. Clean sheets were provided in the lobby. Towels for the showers needed to be brought by students. |
* Food: |
Food in the hostel was enjoyable. The food around the city was very well prepared. Foods native to the region were easily accessed, as were foods from many surrounding countries. Indian food was also very popular throughout the city. One could also find some Asian establishments. Most menus already had translations into English so you could pick dishes according to your dietary restrictions. Many Indian establishments as well as some cafes had menus which specifically marked items as vegetarian- and even vegan-friendly. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Touring the city on one's own was, in itself, a remarkable experience. Many buildings in the city are almost twice as old as the United States. Buildings are constantly being renovated; the city is evolving but retaining its identity. The sense of history and culture present are amazing. You would be amiss if you do not go to the castle overlooking the city. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
The country felt extremely safe. There were no incidents involving students nor did I witness any incidents involving other tourists or locals. Healthcare, while not needed for me personally, was provided for the couple of students who required it over the course of our stay. Faculty gave directions to the healthcare facility or direct transportation to the facility depending on the need of the student. I did not require any vaccinations prior to the trip. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
Language acquisition improvement? |
Being a large tourist destination, the majority of people spoke English. There was no problem communicating your needs while in the city center or at most businesses. Some smaller vendors such as kebab and hamburger stands did work more smoothly with knowledge of German. Many Germans will speak German with you if you begin to speak it and will help you if you forget a word or misuse grammar. |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | Students who have yet to experience Europe and would benefit from receiving six credit hours and would like to do so in a culturally and historically rich area would benefit very much from this program. While the organization of the faculty leader leaves much to be desired, the grandeur of the city itself cannot be marred by these frustrations. |
