Koc University: Istanbul - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned that I love to study and be in school and learn new things but I definitely like smaller groups in class because it's easier to ask questions and understand the professor.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I attended Koc University as a 'Special Student' program and took four classes. Two of my courses were upper level courses and were more challenging for me, however, my normal level courses very manageable with the only work I put in outside of class was studying for midterm and final exams.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was staying at my home in Istanbul with my parents.

* Food:

The food at my university was very good but definitely not for students on a budget. It was a little expensive but there were plenty of places outside of the university to grab food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Since I am Turkish it was easier for me to acclimate to the new environment but non-Turkish students would definitely have a harder time getting used to the place because although the classes were taught in English, students often asked questions in Turkish and professors sometimes forgot to translate their answers into Turkish.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I was not very satisfied with my professors or the social life of the university. Turkey in general has the stereotype where friends from high school go to university with each other so most people had their own friend groups and weren't trying to make new friends.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Food at the university was very expensive so it was sometimes hard to save money.

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would try to buy food in bulks and cook for myself instead of eating at the university every day.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment
