Korea University: Seoul - International Summer Campus

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
While abroad I learned many new things: how to make friends, how to balance classes and fun activities, and how to socialize with people more. As I took beginning Korean the semester before going to Korea, I was able to have simple conversations. It helped my friends and me when we went out to eat or made our ways around Myeongdong. I would ask for more water or try my best to communicate with anyone whenever we needed help, I was not terrified of putting myself out there. In addition, I was able to approach new people through the program and abroad because everyone was there for one reason: to have a good time. There was no time for drama or cliques, so I was able to become friends with people who I might not have been friends with. Through this, I was able to enjoy my time learning about Korean culture with people who were also learning, and have a good time doing so. Of course, I made friends with people who were Korean or Korean/American so I also got help from them, and it helped me navigate during my trip. In addition, I was able to meet up with classmates from my home institution in Korea, which furthered our friendship because we got help from each other. This has been one of the best experiences that I have ever been through, and I will definitely never forget about it. Thanks to KU ISC I made a new best friend, and I made friends with people from all over the world. It opened up my perspective on how I viewed the world for the better, and I will never regret it.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

KU ISC was worth my time because not only did I visit a new city and have a wonderful time, but I was taught by the best professors around. My professors knew that we were there to have a good time, but they also expected us to do our assignments on time and learn from what they taught us. Their schedule was great because they managed to teach an entire semesters worth of curriculum in just six weeks, as expected from Korea University, great professors for great students.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Korea University had an amazing program director and helpers that it made it feel like I was at home. They had people direct us to where we had to go for classes and how to add/drop them. In addition, their directors were always happy to help, even with the slightest questions that I had. Like where was my class, or when would we take off for our cultural event. The administration was very reliable which helped integrate myself into the city and the culture.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was very satisfied with the living arrangements, the dorm we had was safe, clean, and very cozy. We had air conditioner to help us combat the summer heat, and the dorm even provided blankets for us. The security was my major concern but it was very tight and made me feel good. I knew that I could sleep well knowing that there was security out in the front desk and also our cards were the only things that allowed us to go inside our rooms.

* Food:

Other than meeting new people, I absolutely indulged in the food. Not only was it cheap and delicious, but it came in very good portions so I was never left with hunger. I also enjoyed trying new dishes, though most of the time I had no idea what was in them, but that was what made it so amazing.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt integrated into the local culture since I set foot inside Incheon airport. As I left with my luggage to find the KU staff, I was surrounded by Koreans and other foreigners. Being alone also made me realize that I was at a completely strange country, and my limited Korean was going to help me try to get by. Using basic Korean I asked for directions and made sure to show off courtesy and respect to the people I encountered. As the days went by I started to feel like a citizen of Seoul, I knew how to get by on the metro system and I knew how to order food and socialize with people. Starting anew in a new country, especially alone, made me integrate myself into the culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Though I did not have an health issues, I did notice that there were many pharmacy stores near our campus that was ready to help students when they needed it the most.

* Safety:

I have never felt more safe than when I was at Seoul. Coming from cities in the United States, I was nervous staying out late past 9pm, because it could get very dangerous back home. But in Seoul, the nighttime is the prime time so safety was not an issue. In fact, there were many people out that I felt like I could enjoy myself and experience things like the night market, that I would not do back home.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

No regrets, I would definitely go with the same program because through the program I met so many great people, I experienced great things, and I had an amazing time learning about a new culture.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Classes
  • Making friends
  • Cultural events
* What could be improved?
  • Cultural events
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew to let loose, and open up more to new people. Though I made many friends, I feel like I could have made more if only I had decided to take the initiative. We're there to have a good time, not a long time, a good time, so taking risks is a must. I would also like to know that bringing two big suitcases was not very smart, as I had a bit trouble bringing them back to the airport.
