Barcelona: A Cultural and Physical Distance Past Review
By Christina S (Marketing., Fordham University) for
La Salle, Universitat Ramon Llull: Barcelona - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
Definitely gained independence and a better understanding of my personality. Definitely more stressful than expected but still worthwhile. I still wish I took more advantage of it by being more immersed and surrounding myself with more Spaniards.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The requirements of Fordham differ from the requirements of IQS when discussing how credits transfer. I understand the discrepancies between the grading scales. However it is unfair that it was not properly explained to the participating students before hand as this would have been more useful in the selection process of a program. The workload was less in Spain however required more work on foreign students' end because of the language barrier as well as for our situation since we had to finish our final works a month earlier than they were due. Students differ from those in America because most did not pay as much attention or seem to be as concerned with their performance in class, as was demonstrated in how they interacted with the professors. IQS classes resembled my high school experience. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Professors are very accessible. Small program and the other foreigners were close knit. My expectations however were not met because it was not a program designed for foreign exchange students but rather a direct enroll program. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Housing was arranged by my roommate. There was very little support from either end when choosing housing. For example, we lived in a notoriously dangerous part of Barcelona and had picked it without even knowing its reputation. The apartment came furnished with the necessities however I did not know about the roach problem until I arrived. I initially wanted to live with natives or a host family and I still think this would have been a better situation. |
* Food: |
excellent food but expensive to eat out. home cooked easy meals were routine. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Travel as much as possible. Merce festival in September in Barcelona is very fun and different. Barcelona is a proud city. However very few activities were set up by my program. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Safe city although I lived in a somewhat dangerous neighborhood. There was no nurse's office in my host university and I had difficulty finding a doctor when I was very sick with a stomach virus. Very bad experience as far as health. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | Food: 40 euros a week. Personal products last a while. Going out and visiting sites as well as travel costs more than expected. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Minimized food expenses by cooking constantly. Take advantage of free museum days and student discounts as well as foreign exchange or Erasmus groups on facebook to get to places for free. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Beginner |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | Intermediate II |
Language acquisition improvement? |
Students at the university were eager to practice their english skills and were excited to hear that there were Americans in class. However the teaching was all done in spanish and interactions with professors were done in spanish. The only aspect that was missing in the language aspect of the program is housing. Had i been living with native speakers it would have been easier to become more fluent. |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Direct Enrollment |
Other Program Information
* Where did you live?
Select all that apply |
|
* Who did you live with?
Select all that apply |
|
A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | Definitely talk to another student that has done this same program when looking for housing, information about classes, and how to handle the whole culture shock. This student should have a good proficiency of Spanish and be outgoing enough to handle this school. |

Comments: | A lot of grades (projects, class exercises). He is a hard grader on projects and has high expectations. Does not take attendance so spanish students do not take the class as seriously but attendance is required to have the extra grades and participation in class. He will work with students who try hard. |
