The Oxford Bubble July 07, 2022

By (English, Middlebury College) - abroad from 10/03/2022 to 06/17/2022 with

Lincoln College, University of Oxford - Visiting Students Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I took a deep dive into aspects of English Literature I would have never explored otherwise. I gained a lot from the intensive tutorial system.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Very academically rigorous, with the opportunity to take a deep dive into your chosen subject. However, much of the education is self-taught. Very little will come from your tutors beyond the assigned reading list.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration gave me very little information ahead of my arrival. They were unaccomadating when I needed assistance over the vacation periods when you have to completely move out of your dorm or pay upwards of $1,200. This was not communicated to me ahead of time and they were unwilling to offer much help. They also never put me on the email list that communicated information to the students even after personally saying they would address this multiple times.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My room was beautiful, right on campus. However, the fact of moving out every 8 weeks was a real inconvenience as an international student.

* Food:

Food was fine, definitely not as good as Middlebury and with few options for vegans/vegetarians. Also very limited hours. If you are not available during the 30 minutes of service, you will have to buy food elsewhere. And no kitchen access for us!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I was fully integrated as an Oxford student. If I didn't mention I was visiting for a year nobody would know.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

You're covered through Oxford under a UK healthcare plan. However, there are very few mental health resources available.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I would choose a program that allowed me to travel more and experience things beyond the bubble of the university I was enrolled in.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Really hard to live on a budget here. Every social event costs money and extremely limited dining hall hours forced me to eat out more than I'd prefer. Not a cheap city!

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150/week
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Get a mini-fridge to keep some leftovers in.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The complete immersion as an Oxford student
* What could be improved?
  • Administrative support for people in this program. Because there are so few of us each year, they seem to not care much about our personal experience.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? You will be fully immersed in and at Oxford, but the opportunity to explore much beyond that will be nonexistent. If you are going abroad solely for academic purposes, this program is for you.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Academic or Linguist
You went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you. You had a great time abroad, but never lost sight of your studies and (if applicable) were diligent with your foreign language study. Good for you!
