Loop Abroad: Kruger National Park - Veterinary Service in South Africa Summer Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. I learned a lot of valuable veterinary medicine and learned about the culture as well.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The accommodations were good, but we tended to run out of hot water a lot, however, South Africa was in a drought when I was there so I don't want to hold it against them.

* Food:

Wish we were able to choose more South Africa food for lunches, but food was always good!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Due to my program being focused on animals, we didn't interact much with the people outside of the facilities we worked at. However, I feel as though they did their best to teach us the culture and I still feel as though I learned a lot about South Africa from this program.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The staff was amazing and so supportive and accommodating, the food was delicious, the housing was good, and I learned so so much!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

In this program, the housing and food was included so the only money I spent was on extra snacks I wanted and souvenirs.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I was buying a lot of souvenirs so I'd say I spent probably 50-60 dollars each week.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
