Lorenzo de' Medici – Florence

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was absolutely worth it. I got to learn about a different culture, got to learn about a different language, and I became a lot more independant. It was a very good expierence. I feel like I am one step closer to being able to deal with life outside of college.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

You learn inside the classroom and out. I learned so much about art, but I also learned a lot about cultural differences and different ways of life.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They were fine. They check up on you occassionaly and you can go to them with any questions you have. They give you packets with recomended places to go that give you discounts and such which can be very important since you pay for your own food etc. They also warn you if you have any attendance problems etc.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We had a landlord and lived in an apartment by the ponte vecchio. It was about a ten to 15 minute walk from school and had decent living conditions. Our apartment was a little small, but it was cute and cozy. We had some internet problems, but you can call your landlord if there are any problems. We were the only english speakers in our apartment building and the only students however the neighbors were very nice. Be prepared for lots of stairs and timed light switchs.

The beds were slightly uncomfortable and the apartment was pretty small, but that meant less cleaning so it was all good. I was satisfied with the living arrangemants. The neighborhood was very safe and we were right in the center of Florence. The location was to die for, you could walk to everything. You could see the Duomo, ponte vecchio,and the Ufitzi every day. And you were also close to all the night life. It was a fun place to be. You didn't really have to buy anything. Sheets and everything were there.

* Food:

Italy has excellent food. Try to change things up though. I got kind of sick of pasta. Gelato and Kabob's are delicious and very prevalent in Italy. And of cousre pasta and pizza are everywhere.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved the feild trips through the school. I got to meet cool people and see some truely beautiful places. I went on the feild trip to Carnival in Venice, hiking through the alps, and the french rivera. All were amazing experiences. I also did some not related travels through bus to alps. Another great resource for travel.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

You kind of had to fend for your self as far as health. Getting to an english speaking docotor can be difficult. I would suggest bring lots of medication from home like advil and cough medicine and things of that nature. Finding things at pharmacies can be slightly difficult if you dont know what to look for.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent rough 30 euro a week or less on groceries. There are certain places that give you disccounts so look out for those. I also spent 3.50 euro on sandwhiches most days for lunch. And then went out for dinner about once a week (prices varied for the resturant). I also did a bunch of shopping at the leather market again look for deals in the guide handbook the school gives you. Im a shopaholic most of this was unneeded shopping. I spent roughly 100 euro per class for my studio classes.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Be very careful about roaming charges etc for phones. Make sure you get an italian or global sim card for your phone. I didn't have problems but I know people who did. And just be smart about comparing prices to make sure you are not being ripped off. Don't be affraid to haggle. Americans are not used to this so most people will try and take advantage of that. You are never obligated to buy anything even if the store clerk is pressuring you.

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I had taken many years of spanish before I went which helped in some ways but hurt in others. They are very similar so it is easy to pick up on, but its also easy to get them confused because they are so close. Again to improve make sure you study and befriend locals. I ended up dating an italian guy and that actually helps a lot haha.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Foundation Oil Painting

Course Department:
Instructor: Marsha Steinberg
Instruction Language: English
Comments: It was challenging, but fun. Like it was a lot of work, but the professor is very nice and willing to help. We went on a feild trip to the Piti Palace to see some of the masters and look at different techniques which was both awesome and helpful. I participated more in class because I really liked the professor.
Credit Transfer Issues: It should be accepted as painting 101
Course Name/Rating:

Classic Photography

Course Department: PHO 101
Instructor: Guian Luca
Instruction Language: Broken English
Comments: I learned a lot in this class and was able to document my trip while completing class assignments which was great. The professor is super nice and clearly knows what he is talking about. He is more on the relaxed side as far as rules so the class is really going to be what ever you put into it. We got to go on feild trips around the city to photograph things which I really liked. It was both very relevant and fun.
Credit Transfer Issues: It transfers over as photography 101
Course Name/Rating:

The Foundamentals of Technical Graphic Design

Course Department: GRA
Instructor: Paolo
Instruction Language: Broken English
Comments: Paolo is the man! He is super nice and very helpful. He will sit there with you until you understand everything. You do a lot of fun projects in this class and do not have tons of resitrictions, its about self expression. There was a lot of work in this class, but you learn a lot.
Credit Transfer Issues: Talk to the professors for graphic design 2 or graphic design software before hand. They tend to be concerned that you did not learn the same things, but you do. You learn Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. The credits should transfer.

Beginners Italian

Course Department: ITL 101
Instructor: Marina
Instruction Language: English and Italian
Comments: This was the hardest course for me because I kept mixing up my spanish with my italian, but the teacher was very nice and we took a lot of very fun and interesting feid trips. I learned a lot about Italian culture in this course as well as enough italian to be able to undrestand and hold a basic conversation with local italians.
Credit Transfer Issues: my language requirement was filled before I left so this course does not actually count for anything for me, but It should transfer no problem. What better place to learn italian than Italy?
Course Name/Rating:

History of Graphic Design

Course Department: ARTH
Instructor: Marsha Steinburg
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was interesting. I learned a lot about the different modern art movements and found that in the end I had a much better appreciation than I did before for modern art. We had a lot of fun class discussions.
Credit Transfer Issues: transfers well.
