Florence in the Fall Past Review

Lorenzo de' Medici – Florence

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I am glad that I went yes, but I do not think id like to live in Florence ever again. I learned that I dont prefer city living and I learned just how extremely touristy Florence is. Sadly it has become extremely Americanized! The experience in general was amazing and the beauty that I experienced while abroad in Florence was just breath taking!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

All tests are given in essay or short answer form, which means it is vital to read the material and really retain information learned in class. Essay tests were some what exhausting and overwhelming to study for and take! On a positive note, If you really like the class, the material or if you learned a lot from lectures, then tests will be a breeze for you! Be advised that there is NO EXTRA CREDIT and little to no homework to help improve your grade, so don't under estimate the final or midterm exam. Study ahead of time so you can enjoy your last few weeks! Same goes for paper writing, procrastination while studying abroad is the number one culprit of poor grades in my opinion.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment was fully furnished including sheets, towels and hand soap for the bathroom. It was a beautiful, new, and VERY little apartment. If there is something missing from you apartment just take the bus to IKEA or hit up the "1 Euro" stores around campus. My aprartment did not have an oven or a microwave! that made things challenging! Neighborhood felt pretty safe minus the homeless man dealing drugs out in front of our building EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! his name is "ganga guy!" he is harmless we think... Over all my housing situation was great! I learned a lot of things about myself and what i want in life, many of which came from the fact that my roommate unfortunately did not always treat me with respect. Communication was a serious issue throughout the semester and i was never actually told why i deserved to be treated the way I was, but in the end I made the best out of the situation and left Italy with some positive lessons and great memories from my time abroad. I wouldn't have changed a thing! :)

* Food:

Italian food... oh how I miss you... p.s. I gained 12 pounds in 3 months!! EKK

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

LDM did a fine job at providing its students with opportunity and activities our side of classes to get active , involved and deepen their cultural experience! Way to go LDM

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

In Florence I felt very safe at night or during the day alone. However it is just like living in any other city you must be careful and keep your wits about you at all times even when your walking in a group.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I kept a very tight and organized budget which helped a lot! I spent about 20 euro every week or so on grocery. DO NOT forget about the currency exchange rate it will effect your budget A LOT more then you expect! round everything up and in the end you may still come out short. You can definitely live in Europe on a budget but i have heard that Florence is one of the more expensive cities in Italy but you just have to be wise about your spending and with hold the urge to go in every store and buy stuff! Also keep in mind that many places will be significant student discounts! I hardly ever bought any thing at the full price marked on the tag! Shop around and dont be afraid to barter!
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? PERMIT TO STAY STAMP is around 100 euro, I was totally caught off guard when i had to fork over more money a few weeks into the program.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? No Italian taken prior to departure.
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

Most everyone in Florence speaks English. Getting outside of the city you will find more Italian spoken in restaurants and stores however. practicing Italian was at times difficult in Florence because so many people wanted to practice their English with you. If you make an effort to only speak Italian you will get plenty of practice. If you don't speak any Italian at all you will have no problems getting around Florence. the experience is so much better if you use their language though.

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? My advise would be to force yourself to get out of the city, see the country side as much as you can and try your hardest to ALWAYS speak Italian. Use your time wisely, it fly's by faster then you can ever imagine!...Trust me! Also fall break is a GREAT time but dont try to jam pack two many destinations into the one week! id recommend 1-3 destination max more then that and you'll spend more time on a train or plane then actually in a destination. Don't wait to plan your trips its very time consuming but also dont stress over it to much!

Comments: Hardest class Ive take thusfar in college! but all in all if you just keep on top of the reading and study for exams its a piece of cake! the key is study study study and know your stuff! I love Milva, she has been like my favorite teacher besides my Italian language teacher that is! :) The class makes a lot of very very Delicious dishes and at times very complicated dishes specific to the region so dont expect to be able to come home in a few months and whip up everything you made in class! However I can make a few things at home which were a hit.

Comments: Boring class if your not into art, but we visited all the major museums and learn A LOT about art history its a good class but challenging!
