Newcastle, England: The perfect study abroad experience. Past Review
By Hillary S (Biology/Psychology, Loyola University Maryland) - abroad from 09/09/2012 to 06/09/2013 with
Loyola University Maryland: Newcastle upon Tyne -
During my time at Newcastle University, I learned more than I ever thought I would. I became more independent and learned to appreciate international cultures and ways of life. The classes were very manageable and I met friends that I will have for a lifetime. This program also features many day trips throughout the country of England (and elsewhere) as well as an on site coordinator making this specific program a lot better than others! This study abroad experience was very very worthwhile.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Overall, the classes at Newcastle were slightly different than Loyola University's. However, I found them to be intellectually stimulating and just as manageable as my home University's classes. |
* Host Country Program Administration

* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The housing at Newcastle University was fantastic. The flat that I lived in gave me the privacy of my own room and came with a fully stocked kitchen which was very helpful coming from across seas. The only downfall was that I lived with other international students rather than all English people. |
* Food: |
If you don't cook, there isn't any meal plan of sorts for the program. A lot of what I ate I had to prepare on my own. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I loved living in the city of Newcastle. There are plenty of things to do and so many opportunities to meet the local people whether it be at the local market, in your classes, or at the pubs and shops. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
Healthcare was extremely accessible to me during my time in Newcastle. I had a few issues that I was able to get taken care of immediately at no cost to me or my insurance as I became a part of the National Healthcare System. |
* Safety: |
|
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $150 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I saved money by cooking a lot of my own meals and using online resources for finding great travel deals. |
