Study Abroad in Central Europe—You Won’t Regret It! Past Review
By Colleen Maher (Oklahoma State University - Stillwater) - abroad from 02/08/2018 to 05/25/2018 with
Masaryk University: Brno - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
It was absolutely worth it. I had unforgettable experiences, made incredible friends, and had to learn to adapt in a way you don’t have to when you travel for a short time period.
Personal Information
| How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
| * Overall educational experience Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. | The classes I was enrolled in were generally very easy, and my professors ranged from very good to very bad. |
| * Host Country Program Administration On-site administration of your program | All of the administrative staff at Masaryk was excellent, they worked to accommodate international students, and the international student club ESN was amazing!! |
| * Housing: How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? | Our room was a good size, but old and dingy, far from the city center, the staff hardly spoke any English in an international student dorm, and once we saw a mouse. |
| * Food: | You can get pretty much whatever you want in Brno, and for a good price! |
| * Social & Cultural Integration: How integrated did you feel with the local culture? | It was a little hard to meet Czech students since I spent all my time with other international students and the Czechs are generally reserved people. |
| * Health Care: How well were health issues addressed during the program? | I never really had any need to use their healthcare. |
| * Safety: | As long as you use your head, Brno is extremely safe! |
| If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? | Yes I feel like I got so much more out of my program than my friends who studied in Western Europe |
Finances
| * Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget? (1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) | Brno is a very affordable city! |
Language
| * Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
| How much did the program encourage you to use the language? 0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language | I took Czech classes, but Czech is very difficult and when people hear you struggling with Czech, they pretty much automatically switch to english |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
| * Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Direct Enrollment |
