McGill University: Montreal - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I did experience what it is that I wanted to - a different US/Canadian university experience, in an urban environment. This program did not provide a life changing experience, but it did enable me to continue my quality education in a different setting - the lovely city of Montreal.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The education system was quite similar to that of a large American university (as oppose to a liberal arts college). There were some excellent professors, some of whom gave ample opportunity to meet with them and ask them questions. However, at the same time, there were also a few professors that did not have as much time to dedicate to students/were not as accessible at all. Overall, I really did enjoy my courses.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

When I needed to talk/discuss issues with a member of the administration, there seemed to be no one available to talk - as a 'visiting' (rather than 'exchange') student I fell between the cracks of the administration. This was definitely frustrating at the beginning of the year, when I did need some support.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

This question is not necessarily applicable to me - I had my own private accommodation. Most McGill students find their own accommodation near the university which is in downtown Montreal... beautiful and well located. There is plenty of student accommodation available (apartments to rent etc.).

* Food:

I fended for myself. There was an option to be on the McGill meal plan, but I did not take up this option.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Montreal is a lovely city to spend the year in - there are many cultural events/elements that can be explored if one take out the time to explore them!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Health issues were briefly mentioned during orientation, and health services were available. I did not have to use them and so cannot comment on how adequately they addressed issues.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I do not have any particular advice to offer - it is simply city living....

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
