Mexico Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
If I could do the experience all over again I would and I wouldn't change a thing, okay maybe the excursion to Sierre Norte, but that's it. Honestly I wish the program would have lasted longer because there isn't a day that goes by that I don't wish I wasn't back in Oaxaca, Mexico. The culture, the people, the food, the atmosphere is extremely wonderful. I say go for it if you have the opportunity.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload for the Mexican History course I took for three weeks was the right amount for the allotted amount of time, and the professor was extremely patient and helpful with the class in making sure we understood the material. The professor spent half of the lesson on language and the other half on the history lesson; the homework that was given was appropriate for the workload that was given in class.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

To sum up the faculty in the host country it's is easy to say: There's no need to fear, Oaxaca faculty is ALWAYS here!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The host family I stayed with was great and more than accommodating, and the arrangements that were made for me to stay with them were made by the program.

* Food:

The food was FANTASTIC!!!! I suggest that you take advantage of trying the different food options while you're there, it is truly an experience in itself.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I enjoyed most of the outings we went on that were coordinated by the program except for the trip to the Sierra Norte mountains, but that's only because I'm not too keen on high altitudes.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The city in itself seemed to be pretty safe, but it never hurts to walk in pairs or a group just for precautions.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

The duration of the program 85% of interaction with people was spent speaking Spanish, and the people I spoke Spanish with were my host family, professor, intercambio (a student the university pairs students from the program with), and in everyday interactions with the residents

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?
