MICEFA: Paris - Study Abroad at University of Paris - Sorbonne

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I never really knew how independent I was until I left for Paris. Paris has shown me that I can be on my own, without being afraid of it. I traveled to Amsterdam on my own and I loved it. As long as I am careful I can do anything I want. I now want to travel to China after I graduate. After all, you will only be at this place at this time once, so make the best of it.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Except for one class, I really enjoyed going to school. I met one very sweet french student who helped me a lot. The teachers, for the most part, were willing to help you.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I felt the program was helpful and prompt in answering questions.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in a chambre de bonne. I was extremely happy with the family that I got. I only paid 250 eu a month and had to give the 15-year-old girl Spanish "classes" for 4 hours a week. MICEFA was amazing in helping me get this!

My family was amazing. I had complete independence for I didn't live with them, however I got the benefits of having a family whenever they invited me to eat, or when they invited me to their beach house for 2 weeks. I got sooo lucky :)!

* Food:

I made my own food so I can't complain. I sometimes ate out, but it's expensive. If you wanna eat out, I recommend gyros, pizza, or anything not very healthy but cheap. If you wanna eat delicious food, you can find many places that charge 12-17 eu for a 3 course meal. One of my favorites is at Place Monge. There was also this really good basque restaurant at Place d'Italie. Order the veal hmm.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There is no way that you can't have fun in Paris. Be fun, be adventurous, but be careful too, like you would everywhere else.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I was lucky enough to be in one of the best areas of town. I never really left the city of Paris (never went to the suburbs). Some of my friends attended a University in the suburbs and they said it was ghetto but never really felt threatened. I never heard of anyone feeling unsafe. I lived by myself and walked everywhere, at night I took the metro or if it was too late I called a cab. I usually preferred to be with people, just in case, but sometimes I came home alone. The only time I felt at risk was when I was walking to a part on the 11th arrondissement (not the safest, let's just say), and a car full of guys started talking to us (three friends and I). We ignored them but they kept bugging. We were pretty scared. Finally they got tired of yelling and left. I feel like if there's any risks these involved men who didn't know when to walk away. I fell off a bike while in Arcachon with my host family. I tried to use my health insurance but didn't work. Maybe it was my fault, who knows? But the program didn't really help me.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Paris is just a crazy expensive city. I don't regret spending what I spent. I just think anyone that's planning to go to Paris, should have a budget, try to get as many scholarships as possible, and anticipate that they will be spending the most money ever. Every cent is worth it though.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Have fun! I would give my right arm to go back, but sadly I'm graduating next semester. Enjoy every second of it because it will fly by. This is going to sound lame, but I honestly have never been as happy as I was when I was in Paris. Paris has all the characteristics I want in a loved one, it is cultured, intellectual, fun, beautiful, cosmopolitan, riveting, wise, experienced, and most of all full of charm.

Histoire des Idees Politiques

Course Department: Sciences Sociales et Economiques
Instructor: Corinne Mellul
Instruction Language: French
Comments: Professor Mellul was incredibly knowledgeable. She had legitimate interest in her students' progress. She was always on time, and expected everyone else to be too. She wanted silence and attention when she spoke, and had a strict policy on it. If you can't spend a full 3 hours being quiet then this class isn't for you. I personally love political philosophy, so this class was really interesting. Only downside is that I personally don't like the French system of having a class for 3 hours. Who on Earth can pay attention for a whole 3 hours? I prefer hour and a half classes any day.

Genese de L'Ordre Politique

Course Department: Sciences Sociales et Economiques
Instructor: Yves Palau
Instruction Language: French
Comments: This man was a sleeping pill. His class was very boring. Since I couldn't follow him 100% because I was human and couldn't just listen to him talk for 3 hours without drifting off, I went up to him and asked him if there was a book that we could read to complement what he was teaching. He had no interest in me being foreign, no interest in helping me, and no interest in what I had to say. I do not recommend this class!
