Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury In Amman

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was absolutely worthwhile and I don't regret going. My language skills improved significantly and I made the best of a difficult situation

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Middlebury's language pledge is indisputably the best option, and I was lucky to have a group that kept it almost entirely through the semester. However, I did not find most of my classes to be fulfilling or challenging.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

This was a condition of Middlebury's first semester in Jordan, I think the housing situation is better

* Food:

I cooked for myself

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Again, my experience was probably not representative of future semesters because it was Middlebury's first semester in Amman. We did not have local roommates and it was difficult to make friends.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

The administration left us to our own devices when we were sick

* Safety:

Although women will be verbally abused, you don't have to worry about being physically harmed in Amman

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? No
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $50-$75
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Learn to love eating cans of beans, and buy delicious, cheap, fresh bread from bakeries

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Intermediate
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Arabic 4
How many hours per day did you use the language? 10+
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Keep up the language pledge! It's difficult but entirely worth it and was definitely the best part of my semester

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
