It was lonely, but I got better at German. August 16, 2024

By (Chemistry and International & Global Studies, Middlebury College) - abroad from 03/13/2024 to 07/24/2024 with

Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Berlin

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a lot of independence and German skills. I travelled a LOT, and I really enjoyed my classes. However, I only had to be on campus 2 days a week, and therefore never felt integrated into campus life at all.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The writing in German was hard, but the tutors were extremely helpful. Participating in class was extremely difficult, but everyone was very nice.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The office was pretty understaffed during my semester, so it was a bit chaotic and stressful.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was living with my extended family in the city.

* Food:

Berlin has AMAZING Turkish, Vietnamese, and vegan food!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It was really hard to meet new people, and I even had native German family in Berlin.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have any health experiences so I am neutral on this. We had GeoBlue insurance but I didn't have to use it.

* Safety:

I felt really safe most of the time, some train stations at night were a bit sketchy, but it was totally fine.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

It was great to get closer to my dad's side of the family, but if it weren't for that aspect, I probably would've answered no.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? This doesn't apply because I was living with my family, so I wasn't fully supporting myself.
