A Cultural Experience! Past Review
By Ivy Yang (Middlebury College) - abroad from 01/07/2019 to 05/17/2019 with
Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Bordeaux
I learned a lot about French culture, food and wine, living semi-independently, and a lot about myself. I love to travel and was able to visit a lot of other cities in Europe as well.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
My main academic challenge was learning the material in French. The courses aren't harder than at Middlebury, they're just in a different language. The French system also emphasizes memorizing what the professor says in class. Overall, I enjoyed my courses. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I stayed with a host family that was kind but also gave me space to relax and be independent. It was a good cultural experience. |
* Food: |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I found it difficult to integrate with the local students, but I'm also pretty introverted. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
N/A |
* Safety: |
Bordeaux is a wonderful city. I never had any issues with safety. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I really loved Bordeaux. They have a great way of life and the people are friendly and kind. There are a lot of great shops and restaurants, and the city is beautiful. Academics are important, but only a part of the study abroad experience. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 50 |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
The language pledge can be difficult, but I would encourage people to try to stick to it. You really improve a lot if you do. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Intermediate |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Advanced |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Talk to people! |
