Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was hard. I didn’t love the Argentinian format of learning compared to middlebury but I was there for the different experience in public Latin American school and that’s exactly what I got. It was great to experience that and while there was minimal support from the Argentinian university (UBA) I had plenty from the middlebury program

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

It was very well run by people who care A LOT. Could be a little disorganized at times but generally good administration

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

No notes. It was perfect.

* Food:

My host family made incredible food and were very conscious of dietary restrictions. I could not ask for anything better in terms of food, although Argentinian food in general can get a little monotonous

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

100/10 Argentina is the place to be! I felt very integrated

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had a medical accident and it was my host family, a longtime partner of the program, who stayed with me for 8+ hours in the emergency room and the whole leadership of the program took great care of me. Geoblue was effective during that process, but as with all healthcare it wasn’t the most straightforward process in the world.

* Safety:

BA was super safe and they over prepared us for life in the city in Latin America, which was great and nobody in the program had any safety issues.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Middlebury in Argentina was basically perfect. I want to go back.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About $200 because I wasn’t really budgeting or concerned about finances

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Language pledge- required to speak Spanish. MUCH more adherence to this policy in Argentina (and this much more improvement and learning) than in other branches of middlebury abroad in Spanish

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Advanced
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Fluent
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 400 level
How many hours per day did you use the language? 10+
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Just speak and pay attention. Don’t speak English, struggle through it

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Full integration being the only international student in local public uni classes
  • Learning a specific dialect of Spanish- developing my own identity
  • Living in the city- BA is incredible
* What could be improved?
  • Extension activities were long and wordy- hard to learn with the format
  • My personal pasantĂa was kind of unclear in goals and expected tasks
  • More people should choose Argentina!
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It’s not as scary as it seems going into it
