I Did It My Way August 03, 2025
By Thomas H (Political Science, Williams College) - abroad from 08/22/2024 to 12/18/2024 with
Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Madrid
I largely learned that I could be confident and secure in just my own company, and that I could persevere and make my own experiences. I also gained huge language and cultural knowledge.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Very intense, but very rewarding! My Spanish language and cultural knowledge greatly increased. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
My host parents were disconnected and prickly, but I mostly got through the experience without incident (except for the last week or so, but alas). |
* Food: |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I worked very hard to get to know Spain, but it was incredibly difficult to make Spanish friends. That's certainly not the fault of the program, but rather speak to tha challenge of making friends through a language and cultural barrier. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
NA |
* Safety: |
Felt perfectly safe |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
My program was socially challenging, but very rewarding academically and in language-learning, and the latter was my primary objective. I was the top of my class in 3 of my 5 classes, even beating out many local students, and I also greatly improved my Spanish. I also connected with local groups, such as an International Choir. Despite the challenges I found for the first half of my stay, I didn't let it keep my down. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
I lived frugally and didn't eat out often, but Spain was relatively cheap. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 400 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Make sure to do your own cooking when possible, and travel via bus and use hostels! |

How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |

How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Advanced |

Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Just speak to everyone outside always, force yourself into situations you might be too timid to be in otherwise. |
