Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Mainz
I learned so much from my experience abroad, including important points about the German language, German culture, and intercultural competence.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 2 weeks - 1 month |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The program, while intense and challenging, provided excellent resources that allowed for timely completion of assignments without becoming overwhelmed by stress. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The on-site administration of this program was phenomenal. The director was incredibly kind and approachable and the BabelGuides (writing helpers) were personable and helpful. I felt supported during the entire program. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived in a suite with two single-rooms, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. It was about 20 minutes with the Straßenbahn (street train) from campus. Overall, I was satisfied with the arrangements. |
* Food: |
I cooked for myself and went grocery shopping weekly. Although eating at the university's dining halls was an option, I chose not do so. I ate there once or twice, and the food was very good, but I found it more convenient and more cost-effective to cook for myself. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I joined the university's debate team to meet a diverse group of students at the university. I also joined a local sports team (unaffiliated with the university) and in this way was able to connect with the off-campus community as well. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
Toward the end of the program, I unexpectedly needed an operation in the hospital. The director of the Middlebury program and the on-site staff were incredibly helpful and made sure that I had everything that I needed (both bureaucratically and emotionally). Having an operation thousands of miles away from home could have been a frightening experience, but the Middlebury School in Germany (both the on-site staff and the Vermont-based program coordinator) was incredibly supportive. I will forever be thankful for their support during that challenging time. |
* Safety: |
I never felt unsafe in the city nor on campus, even if I were out late at night. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I could not have imagined a better study-abroad semester than my semester with the Middlebury School in Germany. I highly, highly recommend this program. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Finding and purchasing food was easy and cheap. I spent about 10-15 Euro per week on groceries. As long as you plan and book in advance, the trains are also affordable. I was able to book most trains for 20-30 Euro for personal travel. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 20-25 Euro |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Purchase the store-brand food in the store. Drink tap water instead of buying bottled water. For personal travel, book trains as far in advance as possible, because that is when they are cheapest. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
The Middlebury School in Germany has a Language Pledge, which means that participants are required to speak the foreign language during the entire program (with exceptions for family and emergencies). |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Advanced |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Fluent |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | Level 400 at Middlebury College (similar to C1 on the A-C scale). |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | 10+ |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Watch German shows, listen to German music, read German books, find meet-up groups in your local area that speak German. |

Individual Course Reviews
Course Name/Rating: |
Hauptseminar: Deutschland und die Kolonien |
Course Department: | History |
Instructor: | Univ-Prof. Dr. Andreas Rödder |
Instruction Language: | German |
Comments: | The course was challenging but incredibly interesting. The professor was knowledgeable and well-prepared. We read one to two texts each week as preparation for the weekly sitting and had stimulating discussions in class. I was assessed through one presentation and one end-of-term paper (Hausarbeit). |

Vorlesung: Geschichte Osteuropas |
Course Department: | History |
Instructor: | Prof. Kusber |
Instruction Language: | German |
Comments: | The course had no required readings and simply required attendance each week. I was assessed through only one test at the very end of the semester. While that experience was stressful, I did appreciate having a somewhat easier course in the midst of a challenging study-abroad semester. The course itself had interesting content and the professor was very knowledgeable and approachable. |

Basisseminar: Das politische System der BRD |
Course Department: | Political Science |
Instructor: | Paula Jöst, M.A. |
Instruction Language: | German |
Comments: | The course was of medium difficulty and the professor was knowledgeable and well-prepared. Assessment was through one presentation and one end-of-term paper (Hausarbeit). I wish the content of the course had introduced more Germany-specific topics, rather than general political theory concepts. It was slightly different than my original expectations but I still enjoyed the course. |

Comments: | The Middlebury program's Culture and Composition course was a great addition to my three courses at the university. The writing assignments helped me hone my writing skills and the course also allowed me to work on my end-of-term papers (Hausarbeiten) with my BabelGuide (writing helper). |
