Unforgettable Experience February 21, 2024
By Julio R (Abroad Program, Middlebury College) - abroad from 08/28/2023 to 12/22/2023 with
Middlebury Schools Abroad: Middlebury in Niterói
Not only did I get to learn a lot about architecture, I think I learned a lot about the Brazilian culture as well. Soccer was so important to Brazilians and it made me curious which led me to taking Brazilian soccer this semester. I learned songs, and dances like Samba. I loved meeting my Brazilian friends who I will never forget. At the end leaving all my friends and the life I had forged in Niteroi I was heartbroken, but glad that I got to fully immerse into the environment.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 2 weeks - 1 month |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The classes that I took in Niteroi helped enhance my learning in architecture, especially because some of the classes that I took were not offered at Middlebury. They were rigorous in a way that the things that I was learning and doing I had no prior experience to. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
I think that the administration on-site was sort of disorganized. There was help if it was needed but the program director made things very confusing and not clear. I did not have my CPF until half through the program because I did not know when or how to start the process. Things like that should clear especially if there is consequences if not completed. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I was staying in a Republica which is basically an apartment with other college students and it was nice. I think the living space was close enough to school and was a safe area in general. |
* Food: |
I loved trying new food, if there was something I had never tried before I wouldn't hesitate to. Also UFF had a dining hall that offered lunch and dinner. Their food was really good and so classic brazilian meals. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I think that at first it was a little difficult to understand people especially since many people spoke informal portuguese and a lot of slang. But overtime I feel like integrated well into the Brazilian community. I made friends who I could speak portuguese to, and I also really liked the relationship I had with my professors. The culture was also just so unique and different which made it possible for curiosity. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I was pretty fine during the majority time of the program but on the trip that Middlebury offers to Salvador I got an allergic reaction and the online hotline that Middlebury uses did not really work well they did not really help. FInding a hospital nearby that took GeoBlue insurance through the app took a while so I decided to go to any hospital. When at the hospital the treatment was not bad, they definitely helped me relieve my allergic reaction. |
* Safety: |
There were definitely some areas that were sketchy but if you were aware of those areas being dangerous you simply would not go. But in my general area where I was staying at I did not feel unsafe. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I think that in Brazil I truly learned that people around the world live differently. I felt like in Brazil I was not only welcomed and helped by the locals I felt like I was apart of them. Unity is important to Brazilians and that is what I loved most because I personally think the United States focus a lot on individualism. Also the environment was immaculate and being in a warm and sunny place made it even better, the beaches were one of kind nothing like the beaches here. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
I think there was a good amount of things like street food that was cheap but most things were pretty expensive in stores. It also really depends on the person on what they waste their money on. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | About 100 a week |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Make sure you apply for a international card before going because then you won't be charged taxed on your card when you buy something. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
All of my classes were professors who spoke in Portuguese and my classmates as well so I was forced to speak Portuguese which I loved. There was also a Portuguese class we took that helped me learn more of the vocabulary especially used in Rio. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Beginner |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Advanced |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | 300 level Portuguese class |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | 10+ |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Be friends with the program peers but try to make native Brazilian friends that will help you speak more Portuguese, I saw many people who choose to stick with their english speaking peers but that ruins the experience. Also read books, I tried to read to book on the beach once in a while and really helps in vocabulary but also pronouncing words. |

Conforto Ambiental I |
Course Department: | Architecture and Urbanism |
Instructor: | Marilia Fontenelle |
Instruction Language: | Portuguese |
Comments: | Yes, this class made me begin to think of architectural techniques that helped balance the temperature in structures without using carbon emissions. There were a few field trips that we went on that occured in the central area of Rio where were looked at these techniques that are used in Brazil in person. |

Projecto de Arquitetura I |
Course Department: | Architecture and Urbanism |
Instructor: | Marilia Fontenelle |

Comments: | This class was challenging because I began using meters when creating floor plans and other drawings. I also got to create a portfolio in this class where I incorporated a lot of the techniques that I was learning in Conforto into the house. There was a few trips to a few museums and I think my favorite was visiting a architecture firm where we got to meet some brazilian architects. |

Grafica Digital |
Course Department: | Architecture and Urbanism |
Instructor: | Gustavo de Oliveira Martins |
Instruction Language: | Portuguese |
Comments: | This class was a challenge as well because before this class I had not used any software for architecture like autocad and sketchup. I got the opportunity to work on a project on both softwares as well as photoshop. The professor was great but I think he could have been a bit more helpful. |
Credit Transfer Issues: | I have not had any issue yet. |

Comments: | This class was not very challenging but very informative. I got to learn about different materials used in architecture and what they are good for. We also took a trip to Leroy Merlin which is similar to Home Depot where we looked through the materials that we were learning of. |
