About
Designed for students with advanced Spanish language proficiency, the Middlebury School in Puerto Rico offers a fully immersive academic and cultural experience at one of two distinctive program sites. Students enroll directly in courses alongside Puerto Rican peers in either San Juan or Mayagüez, choosing from a broad range of disciplines taught entirely in Spanish. Guided by the Middlebury Language Pledge, participants strengthen their language skills through daily interaction in the classroom, with host families, and throughout the local community while gaining a deeper understanding of Puerto Rico's unique cultural, historical, and political identity.
Puerto Rico's capital is one of the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded cities in the Americas, where more than five centuries of history meet the energy of a modern Caribbean metropolis. Students studying in San Juan enroll at either the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus or the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, engaging fully in Puerto Rican university life while exploring a city known for its vibrant arts scene, historic architecture, diverse neighborhoods, and rich culinary traditions. From the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan to museums, festivals, and community events, the city provides countless opportunities to practice Spanish while experiencing the island's distinctive blend of Caribbean, Latin American, African, and Spanish influences.
Located on Puerto Rico's western coast, Mayagüez offers a different perspective on island life through a close-knit university community and a more relaxed pace. Students enroll directly at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, one of the Caribbean's leading public universities, renowned for its strengths in engineering, agriculture, business, and the sciences, while also offering a broad liberal arts curriculum. Surrounded by beautiful beaches, mountains, and nature reserves, Mayagüez provides an ideal setting for students seeking a deeply immersive experience in Puerto Rican culture. Its welcoming community, vibrant local traditions, and active student life create abundant opportunities to develop advanced Spanish proficiency through meaningful engagement both on campus and throughout the region.
