New York University: Study Away in New York City

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It didn't really change much, I learned a bit more about the city and what it's like to live in it, but growing up half an hour away, it didn't make a huge difference. The program was essentially a good way to get a requirement out of the way.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was difficult, as there were only a few weeks between the end of school and the start of the program during which it was recommended that all of the reading material be finished, and if other plans prevented that, we were responsible for finishing a new book every day or two, in addition to weekly tests and papers. This meant that, outside the class excursions, there was not as much time to explore the city as I had hoped there would be.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We lived alone in a dorm building with only students from the program. There was no local nightlife, but the city was only a 45 minute train ride away. The building we had class in could be seen from our dorm, and took about a minute to walk to. Sheets and towels were provided, but it was still better to bring our own. Dining services were provided to us, but were unreliable.

* Food:

There are plenty of places to eat cheap within walking distance for people who like italian, chinese, diner, or mexican/latin, and the dininghall food is good, if repetitive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We went to the cloisters, the met, and the american museum of natural history, in addition to taking a circle line tour and visiting central park.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

It was perfectly safe, provided that we remained in groups and had an understanding of the places we were going.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
