New York University, Tisch Study Abroad: Introduction to Fashion Photography

This January term class will explore fashion, style, beauty, body representation, and popular culture through photography and imaging. This introductory-to-intermediate course in fashion photography explores composition, studio, and outdoor lighting (with an emphasis on portrait and beauty), industry trends and the use of Photoshop and CaptureOne software in fashion images. Students are encouraged to bring fashion images to be analyzed and broken down during class time. Students will be encouraged to use any digital and photo-based method or approach that can best serve their individual interests. We will explore the art and production of the fashion shoot, which covers editorial, advertising, and beauty tasks in a hands-on format. Develop lighting techniques for strobe and natural light. Learn how to produce your own photo shoots, scout locations, and work with models, and makeup artists. During the semester, we will also attend exhibitions at fashion houses, lectures, view contemporary and historical exhibits, screen documentary films about fashion designers and photographers; and discuss a variety of images in art and pop culture by looking closing at fashion magazines produced worldwide.
