Presbyterian College: Faculty Led Spring Break Tour of Portugal

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a true knowledge of a culture other than my own. It was most definitely a worthwhile experience. Looking back, I'm glad I can say I went abroad during my time at PC. I would regret it if I didn't.

Every person I talked to spoke English. It was very easy to order food and find locations.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Lisbon, Sintra, and the Azores are all very safe. Just be smart. If you want to go out late at night, do so in groups.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I hardly spent any money. I did a little shopping and most dinners were included with the trip. I ate modest lunches. Spend like you would in the U.S., but don't be too frugal. A trip abroad could be a once in a lifetime experience so treat it like so.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I was only abroad for a week and I probably spent a little over $150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? If you go big on lunch, eat a less expensive dinner or vice versa. Also, don't feel like you have to buy everything you see. Not bringing back souvenirs doesn't mean you didn't have a good experience. You'll have pictures to prove you were abroad and had a life changing experience.

How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
