No Problems, Good Teachers, Nice Campus Past Review

By (Economics., Trinity University) - abroad from 01/03/2013 to 06/08/2013 with

Queen Mary University of London Study Abroad programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned to get by with less stuff. I saw many different ways that people live across Europe. I also gained many new friends. Studying abroad was definitely worthwhile. If I did it over again I would probably think about going somewhere a little more exotic, but London is a fantastic city with free museums, lots of shows, and an active nightlife.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

For the most part, the teachers were great, but you did not spend much time in class which resulted in covering less material than an American class. There were also very few graded assignments. They did tend to grade a little bit more rigorously than American courses, but there was less work.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The study abroad office was well organized and helpful. There were not many activities, but there were also not many problems.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had a small private room on campus in a flat with five other students. My flat mates included 3 locals and 1 American. My only complaints are that the shower temperature tended to change without while taking a shower and there were a lot of fire drills. The staff was polite and maintenance was quick.

* Food:

Do not get the meal plan. The curve is terrible. You are much better off going to one of the many restaurants or one of the two grocery stores within a five minute walk from campus.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

You are taking classes with locals as well as other study abroad students, but I had some difficulty meeting locals. I made the mistake of going to the second club fair day when not all of the clubs were there. Also, my flat mates were pretty reclusive. Other people had different experiences.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have any health issues that needed attention while there, but there is a hospital right next door.

* Safety:

I did not hear about any problems, but Queen Mary is not in the safest neighborhood. I did see people who I suspect were pickpockets, and I know that many girls did not like going out alone at night.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I have pretty simple tastes when it comes to food, but I don't like to cook and there were other expenses like the tube. Queen Mary is in a very cheap area compared to the rest of London, and it was very cheap compared to some of the other places I visited like Stockholm and Dublin.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I didnt keep an exact budget, but probably about $150 or so.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Eat at the donor places, and also go to whetherspoons. Also, ryanair may be a cheap way to fly, but be careful, they will add fees wherever they can.

Medieval World: Structures and Mentalities

Course Department: History
Instructor: Denley
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The teacher was a little over-energetic but very interesting and knowledgeable. The course was not taught chronologically like most history classes, but instead focused on the culture of Europe during medieval times. It was the most American of the classes I took while studying there. Once a week the class met to discuss primary sources on the topics that we covered in lecture. These discussions could become very engaging and really helped teach the material.

Japanese Film

Course Department: History
Instructor: Jamesom
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was pretty good. I like anime, and this course was a great way to learn more about Japanese culture. On the other hand, the actual history part of the course was just power point slides and was rather boring. The teacher seemed to care much more about the films than the history.

Architecture in London II: 1837 to present

Course Department: History
Instructor: Hultzsch
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This class did go to several places in London, but it was boring, often cold, and badly taught. The visits were not even taught by the professor for 2/3 of the class. The teacher failed to give us a good overview of the history of architecture in London.
