Queen Mary University of London Study Abroad programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The experiences I gained as an actor made my experience worthwhile.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I have studied abroad at another university in England and I feel that QMUL does not offer the same international integration. Students (both erasmus and study abroad) tended to stick with students from their own counties at QMUL and this was something I did not experience during my previous abroad experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

London is a big city with big city crime, however, QMUL is situated in Mile End which seems to have an increased crime rate from the rest of London.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 100-200 USD
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Eat at home. Know that transportation out of Mile End will add up so budget that in (bus is cheaper than the tube but much slower).

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • acting opportunities
  • proximity to world class theatres
  • ability to travel to other countries
* What could be improved?
  • warning students about the area the school is located in (while not horrible is was a shock and did not feel like it was apart of London)
  • informing students of the mind sets that Londoners have towards terrorism
  • explaining specifics of budgeting for a city like london (about how much one can expect to pay a week- i.e. around 6 pounds a day if leaving mile end)
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? The different mind sets that Londoners have towards terrorism. Much like a pre-9/11 US they believe it cannot and will not happen in the city and are vocal in ridiculing those (even local students) who may express concern or desire for caution after events such as the Paris attacks this Fall.
