By A student (English, Wellesley College) - abroad from 09/15/2023 to 05/01/2024 with
Queen Mary University of London Study Abroad programme
I learned that I am capable of being independent. It was very worthwhile.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 0-2 weeks |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Not the same as Wellesley, I had a great time in the English and Drama department but I didn't have a better experience in their geoscience than what I have had in Wellesley's STEM classes. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The communication was mostly through email and we barely saw them. It just was really impersonal. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
It was weird, like a dorm catfishing online as an apartment. |
* Food: |
I cooked for myself so I don't know. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
A lot of the classes you can take if you only take a semester are full of abroad students from America. The whole year is super fun but way more fun during the second semester. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
Healthy the whole time never went to the pharmacy or anything. |
* Safety: |
Extremely safe. A lot of people harp on the area that the school is not being safe but I felt safest there, in my honest opinion those who say the area is "dangerous" are racially biased. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
Well now I know how it went I would want to go farther, maybe Korea. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
It was fine, I have a lot of support though, if it was just me I would've been a lot more concerned. I was also being thrifty. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 150-200 depending on the week/month. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Cook for yourself, plan ahead of time as much as you can. Stick to whatever budget you decide on, and/or account for raises and dips in spending. |

Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Direct Enrollment |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | Making friends is like riding a bike for the first time in a long time, you always think you can't do it then after mess up once or twice you remember it's not that hard. |
