Queen Mary University of London Study Abroad programme
The main purpose of going abroad was the travel and I was able to do this easily from London.
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The classes were too easy yet frustrating because of the procedures we had to follow for something as simple as turning in an assignment. Although I took upper level courses in addition to introductory ones, I was rarely challenged. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Administration did not seem to be enthusiastic to deal with students. I was tossed around to different secretaries for two weeks before I found the proper contact. The program's strengths are that there is a vibrant community and plenty of time during which to travel. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Housing was good, the cleaning service was nice. I wished that they provided cooking ware for us since buying everything was expensive and frustrating when we had to leave it behind after just two months. |
* Food: |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I loved the spring fair and the farmer's market that happened every week. I also took advantage of the squash club and their willingness to teach students for very little money. I made some great friends that way. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Safety was excellent! I thought that the surrounding area was a little off putting in that it was not a good idea to walk alone at night, but as soon as I went onto campus grounds I felt very safe. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | About 40 pounds or $60 on food and maybe another 20 pounds, or $30, on going out per week. This is keeping in mind that I like to eat meat with most meals and food was overall expensive in London. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | You need a chip and pin credit card at a lot of places. The normal US magnetic swipe cards are not accepted everywhere. |
Language
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
