Rhodes College: Oxford - British Studies at Oxford

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much about the history and culture of England in addition to the classes that I was taking. I definitely think that the program was worthwhile!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The professors were extremely knowledgable about their subjects. The classes covered a great deal of information, yet I still felt like we learned in depth about them.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They were extremely well organized, and Rhodes college was also very hospitable.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing was one of the best parts. The rooms were HUGE, and each one came with its own sink, refrigerator, desk, chairs, closet, and chairs. Some of the rooms even had a separate sitting room, but mine did not.

* Food:

The food was surprisingly good. I had heard before going that food in England was not very good, but I can only recall 2 dishes that I did not like in the 6 weeks that I was there. It was also awesome that the food was included with the program. I didn't have to worry about budgeting food costs, and the food was plentiful and tasty.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

After a few weeks I felt like I had integrated pretty well into the local culture. However, summer is a huge tourist time in Oxford and there are hundreds of college kids from the United States doing the same types of programs at different colleges at the same time. Therefore, I felt like I met a lot of other college kids from the U.S. and had less time to meet and get to know the locals.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have any health problems during this trip, but there were a few kids who did. The program seemed to be very prompt and helpful in getting these kids the help that they needed. I did not need any vaccines for this program.

* Safety:

I felt very secure within my college. The gates surrounding the college had to be opened with a key, and you also had to have two other keys to get into your hall and your room. The main entrances also had guards that were on duty at all hours so I never felt unsafe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Visiting England was not very student budget friendly. The program was very expensive, although it did include food costs with the program. Another perk of the program was that they would subsidize any educational activity that you attended up to $10 upon presenting them with a receipt.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Probably around $100 per week on other expenses, including travelling and other activities.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Definitely make use of the $10 subsidy that they provide for educational activities. Also, take advantage of the food that they provide. They don't mind if you take fruit or snacks to eat later in your room.
