Rhodes College: Oxford - British Studies at Oxford

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Although still very "American," England has an incredible amount of history that we in America lack. The program let us experience everything England's history has to offer.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The faculty designed a program that perfectly balanced work and play. There were ample opportunities to elsewhere in England, but the coursework was rigorous enough as not to become dull.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program is in its 40th year of existence so they know what to do/how to do it. They have found a way to make everything run as efficiently as possible.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Everyone had their own room, but we were still in close proximity. It allowed for privacy but also helped with getting to know people. Sheets and towels were provided. A cleaner comes every day to make your bed and arrange your room. Sit down dinners were served every night. I was essentially living in a hotel.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We saw many of England's most prominent historical monuments. They were all optional but I made a point to attend most of them, if not all.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Make sure to bring enough money for independent travels. There's plenty of time to fly elsewhere but it can get kind of expensive.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

Shakespeare: Page and Stage

Course Department: English
Instructor: Michael Leslie
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Incredible class. Discussion based. Dr. Leslie would let us work things out ourselves, but offer instruction when he felt it was necessary. We saw productions at the Globe, in Stratford, at the Old Vic, and other places. One of most rewarding academic experiences I've ever had.
