Royal Holloway: Bloody Brilliant. Past Review

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Without hesitation it was definitely worth it. I learned a lot about all the areas mentioned in the survey, but in particular about myself as a person. I met a lot of tremendous people and gained a bigger sense of confidence and self awareness. I cannot recommend studying abroad, in any country, enough.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The grading style was different and difficult to adjust to at times. It was strange having my whole grade for a course ride on one essay at the end of term.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I think all sides of the abroad support staff did an excellent job.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Typical college food, no complaints.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I made my own travel arrangements instead of pre-organized trips.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt safe the entire time I was in England. The campus was in a very safe area and there are strict gun and knife laws throughout the country, I never felt threatened.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would just advise to factor in a bad exchange rate when planning a budget. 100 pounds was equal to 160 dollars, but is spent just as quickly as 100 dollars.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Campus Life
  • Ability to travel
* What could be improved?
  • Communication between advisors
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I would strongly recommend Royal Holloway and England in general. I really enjoyed being on a campus. However while it was much easier to make friends and engage with British students, some people might prefer to be closer to the city.
