I WANT TO GO BACK. Past Review

SAI Study Abroad: Sorrento - Sant'Anna Institute (SA)
Studying abroad was such much more than an academic endeavor. It was just as much an experience of personal growth as it was scholastic learning. You are able to learn so much about yourself and your passions while learning how to live on your own as an independent and mature young adult. You are able to visit places that most people will only read about in textbooks and through exploration and adventure you open your mind to new things. Stepping out of your comfort zone teaches you how to interact with other who you might not normally. As a bonus, I am now an SAI campus ambassador and eligible for a paid summer internship with the program. Cool huh?

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I loved the teaching style compared to typical university schooling. Classes were so hands on and lessons were made applicable to real-life situations. It was the perfect level of intensity to both learn substantially while keeping assignments flexible to allow for traveling and extra curricular activities. I never felt overwhelmed with homework but also never thought what I was learning was irrelevant or too simple. The only thing I would suggest is better internet access and stronger wi-fi. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
All SAI staff members were extremely helpful the entire course of the program. Excursions were very coordinated and I was always comfortable talking to administration if I was in need of something. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The housing was centrally located and very clean. While it could get a bit crowded with 7 girls divided into 3 rooms, it was good to be able to get to know other students. The only recommendations I have is better water heating. |
* Food: |
While the program did not supply a meal plan, the resources available were very reasonable. There were grocery stores nearby and many local restaurants gave us students discounts. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
The town of Sorrento was very welcoming and locals were extremely friendly to us. The school staff kept us involved with Italian traditions and holiday festivities. We made friends with other students and business owners who also included us in cultural activities and taught us about life in Sorrento. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
While the hospital in Sorrento was a bit different than what I am used to here in America, health care was never an issue. I required medical attention while studying over there and the school and program staff were quick to help and went out of their way to make sure I received the help I needed. |
* Safety: |
There was never any moment that I felt unsafe or uncomfortable during my stay. Sorrento was a very friendly environment and I never experienced unfriendly male attention as my father worried I might. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Well, I am a bit of a shop-a-holic so my answer is a bit biased. However, were I to choose to live on a frugal budget, I would have certainly been able to. There were plenty of opportunities for cheap groceries and traveling was feasibly priced compared to America. Nightlife was as expensive as you made it and every day sight seeing was generally free of cost. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | I am really unsure. Perhaps 30 euro a week on groceries split between another student. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Ladies: Save the shopping until the end! |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
I took Italian 101 as my language course and I am very thankful this class was required on the program. The only thing I knew how to say in Italian was "hello" before my arrival and by the end of my stay I was able to partake in basic conversations and understand even more. The school and even locals frequently encouraged us to use and continue learning the language. Particularly our italian teacher who generally taught the entire class in Italian. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | 100 level |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Set aside an hour throughout the day where you and other students can ONLY speak in italian. It really pushes you to retain more and makes you want to expand your vocabulary so you can better communicate. |

Comments: | Not only was Dianne one of the best teachers I have ever had the opportunity of learning from, this class was more beneficial than I originally expected it to be. It was challenging but the curriculum was extremely applicable to everyday interactions on both professional and personal levels. Believe it or not, I was the only student in this class and not once was that an issue! |
Credit Transfer Issues: | They transferred just fine as upper level business courses! |

Comments: | What better place to learn about international business than internationally? Dianne set this course up brilliantly. We took field trips to local businesses nearly every week where we were able to meet with owners and employees as well as tour the company's operations. We also had numerous guest speakers who taught us about the various aspects of business in Europe. We were also able to rebrand the Sorrento Lingue Business Department to better market to international students which is something I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of. You become so much more committed to an assignment when you know it is actually solving real life problems. |

Comments: | This was an online course that I took through Alfred State, Sorrento Lingue's partner university. While it was being taught in an in class setting in America, Lisa was very understanding with us students taking the course in Sorrento. She was flexible with assignments and there was never an issue with reaching her via email. |

Comments: | I am so thankful I took this course because we took field trips to places I would have never discovered on my own while simultaneously learning about the locations history. This hands on learning helped me retain information better and become involved with the materials. I appreciated our teacher for being so patient with those of us who were not strong italian speakers. |

Comments: | While this was possibly my most challenging course, I recommend that every student take a language class. It helps you better appreciate the culture and locals and encourages you to become more involved with the town. |
