Sant'Anna Institute: Sorrento - Live, Learn and Immerse in Italy
I gained an experience of a lifetime while studying abroad. I learned a lot about myself. I learned patience and acceptance for other cultures and ethnicities. I learned what it's like to not be understood in your language which has taught me patience for when I return to America and hear people speaking in what are considered foreign languages in America. This experience was definitely worthwhile and I wish more than anything that it wasn't coming to an end.

The staff at Sant'Anna were very helpful, polite, friendly, and welcoming |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I think my housing location was extremely unsatisfactory. Here is why: 1. Location- we live above a bar that is noisy until 2 am. they sing karaoke and it's impossible to fall asleep before the bar closes because they are insanely loud. additionally, there is a restaurant next door to the bar that starts blaring music at 8 am giving us just 6 hours of peace and quiet. we are also right above a bus stop so when the restaurant's music isn't blaring, all you hear is kids screaming waiting at the bus stop. 2. size of the house- we are the only group that has three people in one bedroom without some sort of accommodation to make up for it. the other people who had three to a room had two bathrooms and a full living room with a couch. our landlord uses what should be our living room and second bathroom as her office. this is unprofessional and i do not feel comfortable being home alone when there is a man in the house that could come into our part of the house whenever he wants. we also only have one bathroom which is unacceptable for five girls. our shower didn't have a curtain so if someone was showering or going to the bathroom and someone else had to go, they had to wait. i don't think this is acceptable. 3. lack of materials in the house- our kitchen lacked a lot of necessary items. we had very few cups, silverware, and glasses. we didn't have any cupboards and no drying rack for the dishes which constantly left a mess. 4. unprofessional and rude landlady- i feel that our landlady was very rude and unprofessional. on two occasions, she came into rooms we were using and shut lights off while we were in there. our laundry room is not very well lit up and even in the day time, we need the light on to see what we're doing. i think its rude and uncalled for for her to go in there while we are doing laundry and shut it off. 5. problems with the water tank/heat- our water tank constantly ran out and we were told we had to pay to replace it. i dont think that was fair because not all 5 of us showered once a day and even doing few showers, we still ran out. we should have had the ability to each shower once a day and had we done that, we would have ran out so much quicker. we also lost our heat and a/c halfway through the semester. lastly, our bathroom constantly had a dirty odor to it even when it was clean. |
* Food: |
after a while, I got sick of pizza and pasta but that is my fault for not knowing how to cook more. I think Sorrento offers a wonderful variety of restaurants and I really enjoyed going out to eat at all the different places in the area |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I didn't feel as connected as I had hoped with the locals |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
N/A |
* Safety: |
I almost always felt safe in Sorrento except one time walking home from the bar at maybe 12 or 1 am with a few friends and a car of guys slowing down twice and then stopping right past our street |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
I had a lot of money saved for this experience so |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | I have no idea how much money I spent total |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | just start saving!! and take out a loan if you have to |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
|
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | none |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | I think had the Italian class been taught differently, I would have learned more. Many places in Sorrento speak English so that didn't force me to learn the language as much as it would have if there were no English-speaking people but the convenience of being able to go somewheere and speak English was very nice |

The Avid AdventurerThe wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal. |

Comments: | I thought it was very difficult to learn Italian being taught only in Italian. I think it would have been more helpful if the teacher explained things or base rules/why we're doing something in English and then practiced with us in Italian. I wish I had learned more vocab and key words and key sentences that would be helpful to the Italian language |
