Study in Sorrento! Past Review
By A student (Romance Languages, Literature, Haverford College) - abroad from 07/02/2018 to 08/03/2018 with
Sant'Anna Institute: Sorrento - Live, Learn and Immerse in Italy
I feel that I have expanded my horizons and gained a more nuanced appreciation for cultural differences. Another powerful moment for me was visiting family members in Calabria, including visiting the small village where my great-grandparents lived before immigrating to the United States. It was a unique experience that I could not have in any other country, and my travel to Calabria was partly facilitated by the location of my program in Sorrento, in southern Italy.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 0-2 weeks |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
As a student from a rigorous liberal arts college, I did not find the academics very intense or time-consuming, but I felt analytically challenged because we read authentic and rich texts. Furthermore, I found the selection of works to be superb, although I wish we would have read more of each of the works because they are so rich and important in the history of Western thought. Also, professor Domenico Palumbo is awesome! |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The on-site administration was communicative and provided many opportunities for group excursions and activities in Sorrento and the surrounding area |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived with an amazing host family. The only thing that was an inconvenience was the fact that there was no air conditioning and it was July. That is more so a cultural difference between America and Italy than a reflection of the quality of my living arrangements, however. |
* Food: |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Sorrento is a very tourist-centered town, so I sometimes found it difficult to be thoroughly immersed in the Italian culture, although I believe that if you put yourself out there, there are plenty of opportunities to experience cultural immersion. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
|
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
All of the elements that I liked about the program in selecting it - the location in a small town in southern Italy, the opportunity to take classes in Italian, and living with a host family - were delivered upon in the program. Sant'Anna Institute almost always met or exceeded my expectations, and I am very satisfied with my choice. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
I spent a slightly larger amount of money for souvenirs and food, but you can get a good meal for 7 euros, which is quite cheap. |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 125 euros |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | - |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
The vast majority of students did not speak Italian, but I tried to immerse myself in the language as much as possible by taking classes in Italian, speaking Italian when going out, and practicing Italian with my host family. |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Advanced |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Fluent |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | 300-level (literature seminar conducted in Italian for majors and minors in the department) |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Because Sorrento has so many English-speaking tourists, you really have to push yourself to take the initiative and talk in Italian when going out, or else almost all conversations will revert to English. |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Direct Enrollment |
