By (St. Lawrence University) - abroad from 01/09/2022 to 04/30/2022 with

Sant'Anna Institute: Sorrento - Live, Learn and Immerse in Italy

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned about how italians aren't all like how i had previously seen them, I also learned about myself that I need my own food autonomy and that I prefer to solo travel. It was worthwhile.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Some classes expected so much out of the students whereas others it almost felt like I could have just shown up for the test and been okay.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

In a host family it felt like i was less than a guest, the host mother also made it seem like such a big deal for me and my roommate to go out to see friends at night. The maids at the home would always be rearranging my personal belongings both on my desk and in my closet, to the point where a printed out sheet of paper that i had went missing. It was also brought to my attention by the host parents that they didn't like when we didn't travel or spend the entire day out on the weekends, because they didn't want to leave us in the apartment alone; also during the last weekend of the program they went on a trip and have left us alone with the two maids 'babysitting' us.

* Food:

At the beginning we had to eat exactly what the mother ate, which was not preferable since she had gone on a diet (little pasta, almost no meat, pretty much only vegetables {mainly cabbage}) part way through the time they must have realized that this was unfair and started to give us more pasta, yet we were severely lacking a source of protein. I feel like this family has never seen a food pyramid before, and when I kindly and discreetly asked for more proteins to be served I was told "it is unhealthy to eat meat every day". The meals we were served also weren't like how i was told italian dinners go, we would only have 1 course and occasionally a desert; I had been told previously that it would be appetisers, 1st course, 2nd course, then dessert. Aside from the meals made by the host family every meal that I purchased myself was fantastic.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Felt less integrated because of feeling like less than a guest with the host family, and I felt like i was doing something wrong when I would meet friends out at night.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Only having access to the school dr once a week was a bit hard, I had a sore throat a couple of days after she was there, then it cleared up before she came back, but i had wanted a recommendation for cough drops/ medicine when she was unavailable. Never used the local healthcare system.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The classes were good and i enjoyed the field trip opportunities,

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? approx $150

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 101
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? watch shows in italian with english subtitles. Listen when you are in public.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'

Individual Course Reviews

drawing on location

Course Department:

Instruction Language: English
Comments: It was very challenging to get a good mark in this class, having to spend multiple hours on an art piece in order to score well. For having been an "on location" class we didn't really leave the school grounds as often as I expected.

Credit Transfer Issues: With this class being listed as a 101 class here it made it very difficult for my home university to allow me to take it, since i already had a bio101 class, yet i learned many new things in this class here.

LeAD

Comments: The internship was okay, it feels like the internship people werent prepared for how many hours of work i would need to complete. Also the additional LeAD meetings at times felt like a waste, it was information that all of the buisness majors already had learned and for the non buisness majors it was information that doesnt actually benefit us much.
