Sea Education Association--Ocean's Exploration. Best Choice. Past Review
By Emma P (Neuroscience and Dance, Knox College) for
Sea Education Association: The Global Ocean
I started this program terrified of the ocean. I wanted to conquer my fears and I did. I bonded with a group of 35 people I will never forget. I became a much more confident person, willing and able to conquer challenges. I've seen and experienced people and places that won't ever be erased from my memory.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
It's a very condensed and, therefore, intense workload. In the Shore Component you had class from 8am-4pm, somtimes 5pm everyday except Tuesdays. You were expected to learn a lot and finish a lot of work. The teachers, who become your shipmates, are incredibly helpful. It's important to remember that a lot of the academic work you do is new to nearly everyone in the program. You will still have assignments and class when on the ship, but it's not as time consuming as on shore. Your primary academic focus (besides learning everything you can) is your independent research paper. It's a tough program. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
I wasn't really sure what to expect so I can't say I was ever let down. It was an amazing experience. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
It's a very, very, very small campus on shore where you live in a house with 11-12 other people. Typically, 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. It's similar to a dorm, but not quite. At sea, you're in a bunk. You live with mostly American students, but there are also some abroad students who are in the program (not many). There are beaches and a beautiful bike path just a few blocks away from the campus. A car can be nice if you want to explore other parts of the Cape besides Falmouth and Woods Hole. Contra dancing and some of the festivals nearby are a lot of fun. |
* Food: |
You do your own family style meals, taking turns cooking and grocery shopping. This is a lot of fun. You really bond with your house and everyone in your class. You can do "family" grilling outside. It's kinda awkward a first trying to figure out how to cook for 12 people, but if you're making dinner with someone, pick a theme! Southern cookin', breakfast night, tacos, etc. A lot of my favorite memories from the shore are around our family dinner table. On the ship, you've got a steward and you'll take turns being an assistant cooking for everyone. It's a lot of work, but also a good day in the galley. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Sunrise at the beach, field trip to learn more about the whaling industry in the Cape, exploring Grenada during out port stop. Every moment was one that was new and memorable. You learn a lot about not only the ocean and the country you're visiting, but who you are as a leader and who you are as part of a group. The experience is invaluable. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
My class liked to get into trouble. But overall, Woods Hole is incredibly safe. The ship has its dangers, but as long as you listen to your mates and captain, you will not get hurt. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | It's a once in a life time opportunity. Grab it. Just remember, the lows are a lot lower and the highs a lot higher. It's a physically demanding and draining program, but absolutely worth it. |
