Sea Education Association: The Global Ocean

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It's a completely new environment, so you learn a lot about yourself by how you react to the different situations.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It's a lot of work, but you learn a lot quickly.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

There wasn't really a host country...

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

On shore, you lived in an apartment. Most people brought their own bedding, but all cooking supplies were provided (as was a weekly gift card to a local grocery store). At sea, you lived in a bunk in close quarters with a few other people.

* Food:

On shore, you pair up and take turns cooking for your entire apartment. At sea, there are two stewards (cooks) and you take turns helping them (only once or twice the entire time)

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Go to Pie in the Sky in Woods Hole! Even at 3 am.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

It's a small enough program that you'll quickly get help if you're sick, and everyone watches out for your safety/mental health.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It's an intense program, but everyone there is willing and able to help you and wants you to succeed/have a great time. Students should go in with a good attitude and willingness to work closely with a wide variety of people.
