Seoul National University Exchange Program Past Review
By Jean C (Biology, General., The University of Texas at Austin) for
Seoul National University: Seoul - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
I think as my trip winds down, although, I have not had the perfect study abroad experience, it has been worthwhile. I think I learned a lot about myself, and it has made me grow.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I think in my regular university courses in which I was the only exchange student, the professor did not teach. They expected the students to study on their own rather than taking something from the lecture. The grading system put emphasis on the final exam over all else. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
I had some problems with the administration, and I think the thing that bothers me is that no one would take responsibility. At the end, the program coordinator asked what were the strengths and weaknesses of the program. As I was talking about the weaknesses, she just said it is not her fault. I understand it is not her fault but I was hoping she would say something about how she would make changes or appeal to those above her so that this doesn't happen again. I was tossed around from office to office which is really frustrating after the first couple times. The program also did not seem to have any idea who was in charge. I was told at first that the room I had rented was not available. It took several phone calls but still it seemed chaotic. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived with family because SNU did not offer dorms this semester.

I lived with family so it was safe and I did not have to purchase sheets or cookware. The downside was that it was about an hour commute to university. |
* Food: |
There are lots of cheap Korean BBQ restaurants. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
The program did not arrange cultural events or field trips. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
For minor issues, you can go to the pharmacy and get medicine. I really liked that and it was really cheap. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | none |
Language
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |
|

Comments: | There was a midterm, a project and final project for the course. The professor is really funny, but he has a hard time leading the course. |

Course Name/Rating: |
Neurobiology |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | Bong-Kiuun Kaang |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | Every third lecture was taught in Korean. We had a quiz every lecture on the previous chapter. It was fast paced; one chapter each lecture. There was a problem set that was assigned. No tests but the quizzes were progressively more difficult. He liked if students asked questions. The lectures consisted of the professor reading the slides mainly. He tried to make jokes. |
Credit Transfer Issues: | I'm not sure if this course will transfer yet. |
Course Name/Rating: |
Ecology |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | E.J. Lee, J. Adams |
Instruction Language: | Korean |
Comments: | There were three professors. The two Korean professors lectured about other topics slightly related to ecology but which did not really appear on the exam. Professor Adams lectured in English and has taught in the US. His lectures were what I would expect at UT. |
Credit Transfer Issues: | This course is supposed to transfer as an ecology credit. |
Course Name/Rating: |
Understanding Contemporary Korean History |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | Sang Hyun Lee |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | I wanted to learn about Korean history, but I had a hard time with her English and teaching style. The book we used was not a textbook so I felt we never got the background we needed. There was a quiz, a paper, and a final exam. |
Credit Transfer Issues: | This course will transfer as a basic history credit. |
