I learned more about myself through learning more about the world. May 30, 2026
By Thomas S (School for International Training) - abroad from 02/18/2026 to 05/28/2026 with
SIT Study Abroad: Argentina - Social Movements and Human Rights
The experience of field-based learning and cultural inmersion has left a remarkable impact on me that I will undoubtedly never forget. I have developed so much as a person, as a student, a creative, a friend, a community member, etc. I have learned more about myself through exposure to things both familiar and unfamiliar. Additionally I've developed knowledge of human rights histories and current issues and fostered the skills to articulate effective action items accordingly.
Personal Information
| How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
|
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The experience was certainly rigorous in a non-traditional form. While there was not an overwhelming amount of assignments or exams, I was pushed academically, mentally, and physically through language emersion, commute times, and other factors. |
|
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Faculty was consistently supportive and went above and beyond what was necessary to enhance our educational experience. There was never a moment where the educational environment felt unsafe or hostile, however it remained open and fostered much growth as a student. I wish that more educators had the genuine drive to support their students the way that the faculty here has. |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The homestay experience was one of the best aspects of the program. This living arragement greatly improved my spanish inmersion. My only reservations about housing were the lack of adequate heating during the colder periods. |
| * Food: |
While all food provided by the program staff was satisfactory and accomodating (especially as someone with a pescatarian and gluten-free diet), the quality of food provided by homestay families and in the general Argentinian cuisine was not ideal. Many of the meals at common cafes/restaurants only served variations of bread (medialunas, pizza, choripan, etc.) This did make it harder to feel as though I was getting all of my nutrients/food groups throughout my meals at times. |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Living in the city with a host-family made me feel integrated with the local culture. I was also able to find Black collectives/and spaces within the city, and this supported my sense of belonging and integration considering the countries dominant European rhetoric/population. |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
After an unfortunate experience with food poisoning, I was able to recieve stellar healthcare through the support of the program. Program coordinators supplied me with instructions to scheduele telehealth calls, pick up perscriptions, and even escort me to the hospital for an entire day. I am very grateful for the staff, the effective and efficient argentinian healthcare system, and the insurance supplied through the program for that support in my time of need. |
| * Safety: |
As with any big city, you've got to be on your toes and vigilant. For the most part, there were not many moments were I felt in explicit danger, but rather moments of discomfort/being unsettled. Rely on host families and program staff to advise you as to which neighborhoods to avoid at which times as well! |
| If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
There were many moments such as meeting new friends outside and within the program context, learning theories/histories that connected with my own, etc, that almost confirmed my belief I was meant to participate in this program. |
Finances
|
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
| Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $120 |
| Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Make sure to take advantage of the kitchens at home or at the program facilities to batch cook lunches. |
Language
| * Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
|
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
All programming and curriculums were in Spanish, as well as communication within the homestay experience. |
| How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | Intermediate |
| How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Advanced |
| What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | Language in context |
| How many hours per day did you use the language? | 10+ |
| Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Make sure to speak with your host families at dinners a lot. I found it to be a safe space to practice, learn and make mistakes. |
