IHP Human Rights August 03, 2023
By A student (American Studies, Wellesley College) - abroad from 01/24/2023 to 05/08/2023 with
SIT Study Abroad: IHP - Human Rights: Foundations, Challenges and Advocacy
I feel like I learned a lot socially because it definitely is a unique social situation. Overall I wish there was more focus on the things that the program advertised but I did have a really good time and felt like I ultimately learned a lot
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
This definitely all depends on which country you're in and also what your interests are. I came into the program wanting to learn more about organizing and human rights at a community level, which was not what much of the program was. It was a lot of lectures that weren't always very engaging and it was just very different from what I expected us to be learning about. I will say the Chile country team really tailored the program to more community level learning and I really really enjoyed and appreciated that month. |

Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
I wish I was warned about pricing in each country. As someone who was paying for everything from my own money, I feel like it's important to know beforehand how much money you should save for each place. A lot of people had gotten money from family for the trip, but budgeting when it was just my own money was pretty difficult |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Do research beforehand |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
We only had one language class per country for the most part so it was almost impossible to be able to practice the language since we had a tiny vocabulary |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | It is a really busy schedule. I wish I did more research going in because once you get to each country it's BUSY and very intense. I ended up finding most places right before we were going to leave each country so definitely plan ahead and anticipate being exhausted after classes |
