SIT Study Abroad: India - Sustainable Development and Social Change

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Going on this trip just made me want to travel even more. It made me realize how much I don't know about so many other countries.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Although I had an amazing time abroad and I learned a lot, the work load was large and sometimes hard to manage.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program advisor was accessible and knowledgeable; however, the opinions she held of certain students seemed to affect their grade.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in a very loud, and chaotic neighborhood, but I absolutely loved it and my host family. My host family made me feel like family.

* Food:

The program center food was always safe to eat and very good. I also loved my host families cooking.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Program excursions were well organized and fun!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never felt unsafe because I never put my self in unsafe positions. The program is very aware of the health risks and takes good care of ill students.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I probably spent about 500 rupees (ten dollars) a week (if not less) on food and transportation when I wasn't living with my homestay family.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I never really ran into expense problems because everything was so cheap.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

We used the language daily. Even though many people spoke English, students gained a lot of respect from locals by trying.
