SIT Study Abroad: Jordan - Modernization and Social Change

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My study abroad experience changed my comprehension of how the world works, taught me invaluable lessons about living abroad and myself, and helped me develop a greater context for my academic interests.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Most lectures were given by visiting professors and professionals so the quality and style varied greatly. Language instruction was great. Grading fair.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program was great at helping American college students navigate a new country and offered lots of learning opportunities that went beyond my expectations.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Leaving with a host family offers little flexibility for dietary preferences.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

SIT organizes several group trips including an amazing trip to Egypt.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The staff of the program made sure everyone was taken care of.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? The program supplies a stipend, which is extremely helpful. But you will need some extra money for going out and shopping.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 102
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

My language acquisition grew a huge amount during my time in Jordan. Although many people do speak English you need to have some Arabic to comfortably get around. The only downside is there are no Arabic classes the last month of the program during the independent study portion.
