Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Workload ebbed and flowed throughout the semester, with some weeks being very academically rigorous and others being fairly light. Tough grading but fair in most cases, and very minimal busywork---every assignment had a purpose.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

in-country faculty were absolutely amazing, the program wouldn't be anything near what it is without them. I have the utmost respect and gratitude for the staff in Panama for always going above and beyond to keep us safe, comfortable, and able to learn and grow.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The homestays were one of the most valuable parts of the program for me. We always stayed in fairly nice accomodations, nicer than I was expecting. Almost never had to share a bed with another student and always felt safe in homes and hotels, etc.

* Food:

As a vegetarian, I wasn't expecting to be able to uphold my diet during the program, but found that the program staff consistently accomodated for the vegetarians, always making sure that there was a vegetarian option that still nourished us.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

One of the most invaluable parts of this program is the level of cultural immersion that is woven into the program. It would be impossible to recreate the experiences and relationships forged on the program if you were just traveling individually. We met people from all different cultures, backgrounds, and circumstances and my perspective on the world and on people has been forever changed for the better.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Health care issues were always taken seriously and addressed promptly and students were reimbursed for medical-related costs, even though it was never expensive. I always felt confident that I would be well taken care of if I were to get hurt or sick.

* Safety:

We were adequately prepared to handle the uncertainty that comes with navigating a foreign city as American tourists. Although it was always important to be careful, I never felt unsafe and felt comfortable enough to travel around the city alone by the end of the program.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I would do this program over and over with the group I was with and the staff. I can't say enough good things about it. I wish I could tell everyone who's on the fence to go for it, I don't think anyone would regret doing this program if they know what they're getting into.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Only really had to spend my own money when going out/getting hotels on our off days, but almost never had to spend our own money which was really nice. The stipend made things very easy.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 15
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? You can pretty much get by with the stipends if you're careful!

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

It was difficult because there was a wide range of spanish abilities among my class, but we were encouraged to speak when there wasn't a risk of some students not understanding a conversation.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? spanish 220
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Practice with friends who speak the language, duolingo can't hurt, read books/watch shows/listen to music!!!
