SIT Study Abroad: Reviews from Former Locations

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely. I am thankful for every single experience I had while studying away.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Stefanie Pollander was the best!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

For two months I lived with Host families, and one month with other American students. Both were awesome experiences, but if I had to advocate for one, I'd say live with the host family!

* Food:

Bland food overall, but it's all part of the experience. Lots of rice and beans, and be sure to try the gnut sauce. I was a vegetarian, and never had to eat meat.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Lake Kivu was awesome, anything to do with the Nile is recommended.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I got staf infection once, but had great doctors at the local clinic.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? The class content is incredible depressing (yet hopeful to some degree). Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster, and to grow like never before.
